BROWSER AND IDE EXTENSION SECURITY

Know what your browser and IDE extensions can access.

Browser extensions see the pages your people work in. IDE extensions, such as those for VS Code, run next to your source code, secrets and terminals. PexLens analyzes both, with their security signals, to identify risky extensions before they become a problem.
Extension Intelligence
Understand permissions, publisher, reputation and extension context.
Risk Detection
Identify suspicious or potentially malicious extension indicators.
Policy Control
Allow, review or block extensions based on security requirements.

THE PROBLEM

Extensions are trusted too easily.

An extension may look harmless, but its permissions and behavior can give it access to browsing activity, source code and developer credentials.
High-risk permissions
Some extensions request access that can expose browsing activity, workspace files, secrets or other sensitive data.
Unknown or untrusted publishers
Publisher identity, reputation and history can provide important security context.
Changes after installation
An extension that was acceptable yesterday can introduce new risk after an update.

Extensions can be an open door.

Secure every browser and IDE extension before it becomes a risk.

FAQ

Extension security: common questions

What is extension security?

Extension security is the practice of checking browser and IDE extensions, such as Chrome and VS Code extensions, for malicious code, excessive permissions and risky behaviour before and after they are installed.

Why are browser and IDE extensions a security risk?

Browser extensions can read pages, sessions and clipboard content, and IDE extensions run with access to source code and credentials. A malicious or hijacked extension, often delivered through a routine update, can steal data without the user noticing.

Can PexLens detect malicious VS Code extensions?

Yes. PexLens analyses VS Code and browser extensions for suspicious code, network activity, permission changes and publisher changes, and flags or blocks risky ones based on your policy.

What is extension drift?

Extension drift is when a trusted extension changes after approval, for example through a malicious update or a new maintainer. PexLens re-checks new versions so a safe extension does not silently become a risky one.

Does PexLens block extensions automatically?

You decide. Policies can allow, alert on or block an extension, and security teams see the reason for every decision.

Which plans include browser and IDE extension security?

Browser and IDE extensions, such as VS Code extensions, are protected on the Developer plan and above. Each unique extension version counts toward your package capacity, just like an npm or PyPI package version. There is no separate extension charge.
